VARSITY BLUES screenwriter W. Peter Iliff will be joining us live on stage to discuss the film before we screen it.
The late 90s were a formidable time in our lives. Movies that came out during that era were able to be giantly successful pop culture phenomenons, while still having grounded, quality storytelling at their core. Plus, films from that era were edgy as hell in an unabashed way. So they were fun too.
It was only during this era that a movie like VARSITY BLUES could be birthed. Is it an R-rated raunchy teen comedy? Is it a serious drama about the insane amount of pressure put on high school footballers in small town? It’s both, and when it came out back in early 1999, no one felt the need to categorize it anyway.
This was a time when the dude who was most famous at the time for being the co-creator of ALL THAT (Brian Robbins) could direct a film written by the guy who penned POINT BREAK (W. Peter Iliff), and it could all be marketed under the MTV Films banner. It’s a time we’re sorely missing today.
W. Peter Iliff will be joining us on September 18th to discuss the genesis of VARISITY BLUES after we screen it, and we can’t be more excited to hear what he has to say. VB is one of those movies that has an almost mythological status to us 90s kids, and we can’t believe we’re going to get a chance to take a look behind the curtain.
On September 18th, make your own rules. If you want to show up in a whipped cream bikini, we’re not gonna stop you. See you there.
