To kick off our brand new Popcorn Reef University series at the Tenth Ave Arts Center downtown (read more about that right here), we got our hands on a movie so big in scope, and so mythical in its reputation among cult film fans, we still can’t believe that it actually exists, much less that we’ll have the honor of screening it!
On Wednesday, June 14th, we cordially invite you to the San Diego Premiere of Joe Dante’s long-lost debut feature, THE MOVIE ORGY. This is the first time the film will ever play in SD, and it will be one of the first screenings, period, for the film worldwide since its original debut in 1968. It ain’t coming out on home video either, folks, so…you kinda need to make sure you come to this show.
Did we mention that this is also a free screening? Seating is very limited at our new space on the fourth floor of the Tenth Ave Arts Center, so we recommend you get your ticket ASAP (limit two per guest). At a 275 minute runtime, this is not a film for everyone, so please only sign up for a ticket if you’re serious about rocking with us all night long. There will also be a waitlist available for those who miss out on tickets, so if you get a ticket and cannot attend, let us know so we can give your spot to someone else.
On June 14th, get ready to have your mind blown for almost five hours straight. We’ll see you there!
THE MOVIE ORGY Synopsis:
THE MOVIE ORGY is a legendary five-hour triumph from Joe Dante—one of genre cinema's most significant masterminds. In 1968, the future director of GREMLINS and INNERSPACE took an apartment’s worth of 16mm prints and, with the help of producer Jon Davison (ROBOCOP), meticulously fashioned them into what is quite possibly the world's first found footage megamix.
Comprised of commercials, news reels, clips from feature films, TV bloopers, and much more, THE MOVIE ORGY is both a fascinating cultural artifact and a wild vortex of mashed-up magnificence. Unavailable to screen for decades and never available on home video, the film has been preserved from the original 16mm reels by AGFA in partnership with Joe Dante and Jon Davison.
