Like many of you, the news of Roger Corman’s passing last weekend took a major toll on us. There’s not really much else we can say. Everything - seriously, everything - we’ve done at Popcorn Reef so far has been inspired in some way by Roger Corman. And a good chunk of the films we’ve screened so far were either full-blown Corman productions, or films that in some fashion have a link or connection to Roger.

“How do we attempt to put together a tribute show?” we asked ourselves. Every Popcorn Reef show basically is a tribute, and it will continue to be that way as long as we’re open for business. Once we realized that, the pressure came off.

So we decided to line up a triple bill one-nighter for you guys that by no means should be considered a “greatest hits night.” That night would last forever. Instead, we’re thinking of this show as a sampler platter to celebrate Roger's influence on the film industry, tipping our hat to three different eras of Corman’s career (gothic horror while he was still directing, 70s drive-in/grindhouse schlock that he perfected the formula for, and trashy rip-offs that brought us toward the dawn of the video store era.) The Casual Company has been kind enough to provide a free champagne toast for all of you between the films as well. It might just be the most sentimental night you’ll ever have at the movies when there’s two Sid Haig films on the bill.

On May 29th, we hope you join us to honor a true legend.

It’s clear to us that your work will live forever. Thank you, Roger.

P.S. - As an extra tribute to the man himself, one of the films we picked is in the public domain, so we won’t have to pay to screen it 😉

THE TERROR (1963) - Directed by Roger Corman

A young French soldier (Jack Nicholson) cut off from his unit is beguiled by a mysterious woman, whom he learns is the wife of the local Baron (Boris Karloff) - and that she seemingly died twenty years earlier.

THE BIG DOLL HOUSE (1971) - Directed by Jack Hill

The women-in-prison film, in our eyes. Don't miss what might be your only chance to see a movie like this on the big screen in San Diego. Beautiful female prisoners (Pam Grier, Roberta Collins, and Judy Brown) are abused in a Philippine prison until they plot an escape by taking the evil female warden hostage with the reluctant help of two male fruit vendors.

GALAXY OF TERROR (1981) - Directed by Bruce D. Clark

Frantically riding the line between fractured space-opera psychodrama and unrepentant grotesque sleaze, GALAXY OF TERROR is not technically co-directed by a young James Cameron — but is basically co-sculpted by a young James Cameron, who assumed production/costume/SFX design duties for Roger Corman and made GALAXY a very dry run for techniques later used in ALIENS.
