Nobody does a cash grab quite like Roger Corman. Except maybe the Italian film industry. Those two worlds collided in 1979, when Mr. Corman bought the US rights to a bizarro sci-fi film from director Luigi Cozzi (CONTAMINATION, PAGANINI HORROR) which very much resembled another galaxy far, far away (although it turns out that the script was in development even before STAR WARS.) The film, STARCRASH, has been called the ultimate STAR WARS rip-off, but it really deserves a little more credit than that, and that's why we've decided to screen it this May 4th day for all of you San Diego Jedis.

Whatever the origins, STARCRASH can stand on its own two feet as one of the weirdest sci-fi films ever made, and there's a wonderful vibe to it that elevates it to essential viewing status in our eyes. It has an almost lyrical quality to it, since there's not much sense to be made of the plot. After a while, you'll surrender to not knowing what the hell is going on and be left with no choice but to enjoy, with a childlike wonder, a truly magnificent visual odyssey of miniature action effects, bikini clad space babes, lazer guns, and a game cast that somehow includes Caroline Munro, Christopher Plummer, Marjoe Gortner, David Hasselhoff, and Joe Spinell.

Did we mention that tickets are only $5.40 each? Of course that's a nod to the whole 5/4 thing, but we're celebrating Mental Health Awareness Month all May long at Popcorn Reef as well. Come hang out on a Saturday night with us at The Tenth Avenue Arts Center for only 5 bucks and truly turn your brain off for a few hours. You deserve it, and you'll thank yourself later.

On 5/4, we're doing our biggest cash grab show of the year, and we're not going to make any money off of it. See you there.

An outlaw smuggler (Caroline Munro) and her alien companion (Marjoe Gortner) are recruited by the Emperor of the Galaxy (Christopher Plummer) to rescue his son (David Hasselhoff) and destroy a secret weapon by the evil Count Zarth Arn (Joe Spinell).
