Last year, we teamed up with our LA brothers at Rendezvous to bring William Lustig down to SD with The Creature Bazaar for an unforgettable screening of MANIAC. That night will always be a high point in Popcorn Reef history. For our next collab with the Rendezvous team, we decided to put together an evening that will quite literally drive you insane.

On Friday, March 27th, join us back downtown at the IMAX of Grindhouses at the Tenth Avenue Arts Center for a special presentation of Mexican auteur Juan Lopez Moctezuma’s LA MANSION DE LA LOCURA, featuring the San Diego theatrical premiere of Vinegar Syndrome’s new 4K restoration.

Loosely based on Edgar Allan Poe's short story "The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether,” LA MANSION DE LA LOCURA (aka THE MANSION OF MADNESS), “mixes gothic horror elements with contemporary absurdism [and] uses stunning visuals clearly inspired by Moctezuma's peer Alejandro Jodorowsky to satirize medical treatment theories.” (VinegarSyndrome.com)

The evening will kick off at 7 with the Rendezvous team spinning deep cut soundtrack cues and library music as hand-picked cult film visuals appear on the Main Stage screen. Come talk to the gang about records and film, and you might also have a chance to win a copy of the film on Blu-ray, courtesy of VS.

Then, at 8, join us for our feature presentation. We have an exclusive video essay from film scholar Abraham Castillo Flores that will precede the film, where he’ll cover the historical background of Mr. Moctezuma’s project and get you into the right mindset for the insanity you’re about to see on screen.

After you experience LA MANSION DE LA LOCURA, we’re honored to welcome Mr. Moctezuma’s daughter, Alessandra Moctezuma, live in-person for a post-film Q&A, moderated by DJ Alfonso of Rendezvous.

On March 27th, the madness of the mansion is uncontrollable. Come downtown and have a film experience you’ll never forget.

LA MANSION DE LA LOCURA Synopsis:

A mysterious man is sent deep into the forest to investigate the bizarre behavior of the notorious Dr. Tarr. What he stumbles upon is the doctor's torture dungeon, a hellish asylum completely cut off from civilization and presided over by the ultimate madman.

-This show being hosted on the main stage (downstairs) of The Tenth Avenue Arts Center (930 10th Ave, San Diego, CA 92101)

-Doors will open at 7:00 PM, and the show will start at 8 PM.

-Guest availably is subject to change due to illness or unforeseen circumstances.

-If you are visibly intoxicated or under the influence of drugs, we cannot allow you into the venue. Thanks for your understanding.

-There will be no delivery of tickets via shipping or email - we'll simply have your name on the list at the door (plus however many tickets you buy). Please bring your ID for verification purposes to check in. We can check in partial parties too, so if you're buying for multiple people and you're arriving at different times, don't worry about it.
