In case it was a mystery, Halloween is one of our favorite times of the year. Cinema specifically set during this season enthralls us even more, so we couldn’t wait to do a show that pays tribute to the spirit of trick-or-treating.

On 10/10, we’re headed back to The Tenth (The Tenth Avenue Arts Center, that is) for a double feature October fright night that’s guaranteed to get you in the mood for Halloween. We didn’t want to bore you with the usual suspects, so we went deep into our candy bag and have emerged with an East-meets-West double bill that has (to our knowledge) never blessed the big screen before.

We’ll kick this jack-o-lantern-fest off with the underrated 1989 slasher/revenge hybrid HELL HIGH. In this slow burner, a reserved but under-the-radar-sexy high school teacher named Miss Storm becomes the target of a vicious prank by a group of her punk students. But once the harassment goes too far, these kids better watch out, because Miss Storm has been bottling up a dark secret from her past that is screaming to get out. Shot on location in beautiful upstate New York, and with the assistance of some pretty epic Halloween masks, HELL HIGH manages to serve as a perfect 80s fall-nostalgia film while also retaining a cold and brutal streak to it that’s atypical for the era.

After that, we’ll head to the always-rewarding suburbs of late-80s Los Angeles for our second feature, the Roger Corman-produced TWICE DEAD. In this spooky trashfest, the ghost of a deranged stage actor haunts the mansion that the Cates family moves into. But that’s not brother and sister Scott and Robin’s only problem. The mansion has also been marked as the territory of a menacing street gang, and, needless to say, our not-so-friendly ghost isn’t too happy about that. Like HELL HIGH, TWICE DEAD nails this time of the year on film perfectly, but in a very California way, which few other films have bothered to do. Todd Bridges co-stars.

On 10/10, it’s a double dose of late-80s autumnness. You can join us…if you dare!
