Popcorn Reef's REEF RESTORATION NIGHT series celebrates the true contemporary heroes of retro cinema - the independent home video labels that work tirelessly to preserve, restore, and rescue deep cuts of cinema and subsequently issue amazing new digital restorations of these films on Blu-ray and UHD.

At REEF RESTORATION NIGHT, we're rolling out the red carpet to give these flicks the second premiere they deserve on the big screen, and to highlight the lord's work that independent home video labels are putting in to preserve the spirit of cinema for generations to come.

We’re also hosting the big screen premiere of San Diego filmmaker Joey Ugalde’s new short film MIND SURF, which will run before the feature.

Here at Popcorn Reef, we like to think we represent the laid-back, sunshine-filled SoCal lifestyle in the films we pick to show whenever we can. Maybe that’s not completely accurate, but it’s part of the goal at least. But what if there were a Shadow Side to our Popcorn Reef programming? It would probably look a lot like our show on November 2nd, as we take over the main stage of The Tenth Avenue Arts Center downtown to bring you Denys Arcand’s unsung grindhouse masterpiece, GINA.

We know. We have the best weather in the world in San Diego. It’s sunshine most of the year, but there’s still that shift in the year where it gets dark early, and we want to have some hot chocolate and sit by a fire like everyone else. GINA is the perfect film to bring you back into “goddamnit, it’s getting dark at 5 o’clock again” season, which is the closest we get to winter in San Diego. Set in a sleepy, snowy, small Canadian province (which really looks like another world to us SoCalers) GINA tells the story of a mob-sponsored traveling stripper (played by Celine Lomez of THE SILENT PARTNER fame) who ends up at odds with a group of grotesque townsfolk that deserve more punishment than Billy and Ricky from the SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT films could dish out.

We’ve seen a lot of grindhouse films from the 70s here at Popcorn Reef. Simply put, when we discovered this film through Canadian International Pictures’ excellent blu-ray release last year, it felt like the exploitation film that we had been dreaming of in our head our whole lives, but never knew actually existed. Equal parts cinematic insanity and maverick social commentary, which in our eyes is the secret sauce to grindhouse nirvana, GINA is a truly one-of-a-kind experience that we’re betting will blow your mind in several different ways.

Joining us virtually will be David Marriott from Canadian International Pictures, so you can hear about how his team brought GINA back into the zeitgeist and what they’re doing to champion Canadian filmmaking for film fans worldwide.

On November 2nd, ring in the time change with a movie so cold, you’ll only be able to watch it during the dark season.
