3:15 director Larry Gross will be joining us for an exclusive pre-recorded Q&A that we will put up on the big screen following the film.
We’re also hosting the big screen premiere of San Diego filmmaker Mitch Silva’s new short film BIG JAY’S DAY OUT REMASTERED, which will run before the feature.
*Due to a theatrical production at The Tenth, this show will be held on the Fourth Floor Theater in the building. The elevator is currently broken as well, so please only plan on joining us if you’re comfortable walking up the stairs.*

When we were growing up, “back to school” season happened in September, not August. It was a time where you had to deal with a whole new set of teachers, sit down with your family at night to discover a new crop of TV shows, and make sure that you were in tight with the right gang so you didn’t get your ass got. Wait, what?
Was there actually a serious gang problem that infected the youth of the 1980s? We don’t know. But there was a whole wave of movies that came out in the golden video store era that made us think that there was. A lot of people remember CLASS OF 1984, THE NEW KIDS, and the brutal exploitation masterpiece SAVAGE STREETS. But one of the lesser-talked about films today, probably due to distribution issues over the years, might arguably be the best. We’re talking about 3:15, also known as 3:15: THE MOMENT OF TRUTH. And no, the title is not in reference to a bible verse. It’s in reference to 3:15 PM, the time of day when school gets out. 3:15 is also do-or-die time, quite literally, when the courageous young Jeff Hannah (played wonderfully by Adam Baldwin of FULL METAL JACKET and CHUCK fame) chooses to face his ex-gang, The Cobras, for a stand off to the death. And only one side will make it out alive.
If you want a single reason why 3:15 is the superior 80s teen gang movie, we’d have to say it’s because the characters are so captivating. Jeff Hannah is a dude who emerges as a true hero that stands by his own moral compass. And Danny De La Paz (of BOULEVARD NIGHTS and AMERICAN ME fame) turns in a fascinating performance as Cobras gang leader Cinco. There’s a certain vulnerability he brings to this otherwise ruthless killer of a character, which creates a complexity you don’t see in films very often.
We can't wait to bring 3:15 back to the big screen for one of the first times ever in San Diego, and we're beyond thrilled that the director of the film, screenwriter extraordinaire Larry Gross (writer of films like 48 HOURS, STREETS OF FIRE, THIS WORLD, THEN THE FIREWORKS, and PROZAC NATION) is going to beam in to speak with us about the film for one of the first times ever publicly after the credits roll. This is one of the Q&As we’re most excited to host yet at Popcorn Reef, and it’s been over a year in the making.
If that wasn’t enough, we’ve also decided to throw a pizza party for all you folks to celebrate the occasion. Come enjoy unlimited pizza, and unlimited soda, for free with your admission, all night long. It might be 2024, but who said we can’t make it feel like you’re back in a better time? We promise no gangs will be allowed into the building, so you’ll be safe.
On September 4th, watch Jeff Hannah take them all on. On their terms. On their turf.
