It’s been a wild 2024, San Diego. We want to extend a special thanks to all of you for proving that we can get down just like all the other finest cities in America when it comes to cutting edge cinema. To cap the year off, we’ve put together what might be our most stacked show yet. A lot of organizations throw end-of-the-year parties, so why can’t we do a movie version of that for all of you? Join us on Sunday, December 15th as we take over the main stage of The Tenth Avenue Arts Center for the very first edition of Reef Fest.
What’s Reef Fest? The idea is, we’re going to bring you the San Diego premieres of three of the craziest genre films touring out on the film festival circuit right now, all in one day. We’ve got some incredible films to show, and some amazing special guests to welcome to San Diego, so shake off that Holiday Party hangover and make sure you get downtown to join us for this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
First up is DEVI DANGER, the new film from SHREDDER ORPHEUS director Robert McGinley, who will be back at Popcorn Reef for the second time this year for an in-person post-film Q&A. In this hard-hitting operatic sci-fi drama, a rock singer named Devi Danger is coerced into having her voice electronically enhanced into a sonic weapon. Just as mythological and ultimately devastating as SHREDDER, Mr. McGinley continues to educate us on what the form of film can look like when you have a fiercely independent approach. We can’t be more thrilled to have Robert back here at Popcorn Reef and to screen this film for all of you.
Next up, we’ve got what might be the most “LA” movie we’ve seen in the past decade, coming from the mind of the multi-talented writer/director/actor Mike Cuenca (LIKE A DIRTY FRENCH NOVEL), who will also be joining us, along with star Kayla Cummings and co-writer/producer Joaquin Dominguez, for a post-film Q&A after a screening of their hardcore neo-Grindhouse shit rocker, WATCH THEM COME BLOOD. Yes, the title means what you think it does. In what will be one of the most talked about genre films of next year, a group of friends traveling on a weekend vacation stumble into a brothel that specializes in “a peculiar type of service.” Unrelentingly brutal, and full of the spirit we all love from the bleakest 70s exploitation films, while still retaining its own unique voice, WATCH THEM COME BLOOD is an absolute triumph of micro-budget filmmaking. Do you think you’ll be able to handle yourself and make it all the way ‘til the end? We hope so.
And to cap the evening off, we’re honored to present the SD theatrical premiere of the highly anticipated 2024 reboot of a film we’ve always held near and dear to our heart. Join us to discover director Ryan Kruger’s reimagining of STREET TRASH. In this Vinegar Syndrome/Screambox/Not The Funeral Home production, global economic turmoil has destroyed the middle class in Cape Town, South Africa, which is now divided between the ultra-rich and the unhoused. Ronald and a group of fellow houseless friends uncover a plot by the local government to “liquify“ the houseless population with a sinister chemical agent called “V.” Existing in the same universe as the original film, shot on 35mm Techniscope, and with some of the wildest practical effects you’ve seen in a modern film, STREET TRASH ‘24 is both the body horror gorefest you’re expecting it to be, and just as much of a poignant social allegory as its predecessor.
Sunday, Sunday, Sunday - December 15th. We’ve got three amazing films for the price of one as our Christmas and New Year's gift to all of you. Let’s bring the house down and close out 2024 with a bang.
