Boy, do we have a treat for you to open things up for 2024 at The Adams Ave Theater. Even for jaded cinephiles like us, there’s still films out there that haven’t been on our radar. When that’s the case, it’s usually a wonderful company like AGFA (The American Genre Film Archive) that comes to the rescue and brings a criminally underseen gem back into the zeitgeist. Subsequently, our mind is blown, and when we finish the movie we think, “Damn! I wish I would have known about this movie my entire life.”

Such is the case with SHREDDER ORPHEUS, and we’re beyond thrilled to host the San Diego Premiere of AGFA’s brand new restoration of the film on January 24th in Normal Heights. Plus, the writer/director/star of the film, Robert McGinley, will be joining us in person for a special post-film Q&A after the screening that you’re not going to want to miss.

The classic Greek myth of Orpheus is reimagined as a post-apocalyptic skateboard rock opera in SHREDDER. The film was shot and edited using a combination of tape and 16mm film, ultimately being transferred to 35mm for its final presentation. That process, combined with the wildly creative production design (which, mind you, was all done on a DIY budget), creates a unique cinematic aesthetic that we feel can best be described as a fever-induced nightmare experienced through the lens of an 80s tube television.

Whether you’re a filmmaker, or you’re just fascinated by the process of how movie magic is made, SHREDDER ORPHEUS is a must-see. Robert and his team have created a one-of-a-kind experience here that resonates on many levels. The only thing more inspiring than the independent spirit of the film is the storytelling itself. It’s very hard to expand on a classic story in a worthwhile way, but SHREDDER adds a haunting, modern message to the Orpheus myth which, in our opinion, the Greek mythologists would be very proud of. Also…of course…there’s a lot of really cool music and skateboarding stuff in the film that’s going to look sick up on the big screen.

On January 24th, let’s shred our way to hell! We’ll see you there.

PLEASE NOTE:

-“What the hell is Popcorn Reef Sleepover?”

It’s a new idea we’ve been working on with The Adams Avenue Theater that’s designed to let you take a night off from 2024 and feel like you’re back in 1980, or 1990-something. Remember when you could post up on a Friday night, have some Gushers and a Capri Sun, and watch whatever was on Cinemax with your friends all night long while your parents had no clue what was happening? That’s basically what we’re going to do here - except in a giant concert hall with alcohol. Pajamas and/or costumes are encouraged, and if you come in something especially eye-catching, you might just win a prize.

We’ve also decided to open the floor plan up at The Adams to let you take your nostalgia trip a bit further. A portion of the theater floor will be completely open. We encourage you to bring blankets, pillows, and whatever else you want to lounge with directly on the ground, or you can bring your favorite camping chair* to sit in. Don’t worry - if this doesn’t sound appealing, we will still have a traditional seating area set up as well. This just gives you the option to watch the movie in a couple new ways.

- (*) If you're bringing camping chairs, please only bring those in a single or double format. Anything more heavy duty than that might bother the floors at The Adams.

-Doors are at 6:30 PM, Show will start at 7:00 PM sharp

-There will be no delivery of tickets via shipping or email - we'll simply have your name on the list at the door (plus however many tickets you buy). Please bring your ID for verification purposes to check in. We can check in partial parties too, so if you're buying for multiple people and you're arriving at different times, don't worry about it.

-Guest availability is subject to change due to potential illness or unforeseen circumstances. Please bear with us during these crazy times.

SHREDDER ORPHEUS Synopsis:

The Greek myth is reimagined as a post-apocalyptic skateboard rock opera in SHREDDER ORPHEUS—a low budget hallucination that drops somewhere between the music video for Devo's "Whip It," a Bones Brigade skate tape, and a surrealist art project. The story follows Orpheus (director Robert McGinley), a rock star who descends to hell in order to save his kidnapped wife (and the universe) from Satan and his hypnotic TV signals. Filmed in Seattle and featuring a rare screen role from Steven Jesse Bernstein—the William S. Burroughs of the Pacific Northwest—SHREDDER ORPHEUS makes its disc and restoration debut with a new preservation from the originalfilm elements.
