The Giallo - a film subgenre loosely defined as an Italian murder mystery that tends to incorporate black-gloved killers, sexy ladies, and hallucinatory imagery - just seems to hit better in January. At least that’s what Cinematic Void founder Jim Branscome thought back in 2017 when he started the January Giallo series in Los Angeles at The American Cinematheque. Fast forward to 2024, and January Giallo is a nationwide phenomenon amongst old school movie outfits in almost every major city. And don’t forget: we launched Popcorn Reef last January here in San Diego at the Regal Mira Mesa with a January Giallo screening. If it wasn’t for you amazing folks coming out to see us play STRIP NUDE FOR YOUR KILLER, who knows if our Mom would be as proud of us as she is today?

We’re celebrating January Giallo every year, and as we officially turn one, we can’t be more stoked to welcome our big brother Jim down here to San Diego to help us present two of our favorite giallic expressions: Dario Argento’s OPERA, and Katt Shea’s LA-set American Giallo, STRIPPED TO KILL. Jim is a world expert on Italian genre cinema, so don’t miss the chance to ask him every Giallo question you’ve ever wanted an answer to. This is Popcorn Reef’s first birthday party, and a celebration of everything we love about movies.

On January 11th, come slash your way through Italy, all the way to the West Coast!
