Our inaugural TROMA DE LA PLAYA screening is here! Join us for the San Diego theatrical premiere of #SHAKESPEARE'S SHITSTORM, followed by an exclusive virtual post-film Q&A with director Lloyd Kaufman, moderated by Eddie from Popcorn Reef. Full details on TROMA DE LA PLAYA are below, but first, a message from the legend himself, Mr. Lloyd Kaufman!

Troma, the legendary movie studio responsible for some of the most successful independent films of all time, has teamed up with the cult film brand Popcorn Reef to bring a monthly film series to the big screen in San Diego at The Tenth Avenue Arts Center and Regal Mira Mesa that will celebrate over 50 years of madness, gore, comedy, and that special kind of shock that has left an indelible mark on American pop culture history. “San Diego is the land of the beach, the babes, and the sunshine,” says Troma President Lloyd Kaufman. “It’s about time we made people nervous out there by throwing a Toxie or two into the mix.”

Troma de la Playa at Popcorn Reef will bring San Diegans a monthly “Troma-tic” experience in theaters, with an emphasis on brand new titles distributed through Troma that you might not get the opportunity to see on the big screen elsewhere. You can expect special guests, regional theatrical premieres of new films, and a party atmosphere along the way. “Popcorn Reef was founded for a simple purpose - to eventize and spectalize larger-than-life cinema for the fans,” says Popcorn Reef founder Eddie Gurrola. “We’re beyond honored to work with Troma - a studio whose work has long epitomized the term ‘movie magic.’ To be able to give the Troma classics, and especially the new release titles, a consistent outlet for theatrical screenings is a dream come true for everything we’ve built here so far at Popcorn Reef.”

“Along with Popcorn Reef and The Casual Company, The Tenth Avenue Arts Center has been a part of bringing off-beat, unique films to San Diego. I have been a fan of Troma since the 80s and I'm thoroughly thrilled to have Troma at The Tenth,” adds Tenth Avenue Arts Center owner Jeff Cotta. Most Troma de La Playa screenings will take place inside the microcinema Popcorn Reef has helped build at The Tenth in downtown San Diego, with additional screenings being held at San Diego’s premier luxury-recliner multiplex, Regal Mira Mesa, where Popcorn Reef hosted an onstage reunion during Comic-Con weekend this past summer for brothers Lloyd and Charles Kaufman during a double feature screening of the Troma classics THE TOXIC AVENGER and MOTHER’S DAY. “The energy was spectacular for all of the fans that joined us,” adds Regal Mira Mesa General Manager Nikki Shellenberger. “Troma has deep roots in San Diego with their decades-long presence here at Comic-Con, and we’re excited to host additional screenings of Troma de la Playa to keep the party going.”

Troma de la Playa at Popcorn Reef starts on Wednesday, November 5th with this SHAKESPEARE'S SHITSTORM screening / Q&A right here, and we're going to keep things rolling right away on November 12th at The Tenth with a double bill of the amazing new Troma films RISE OF THE SUPER TROMETTES and CURSE OF THE WEREDEER.

It's a dream come true for us to host this new series for you, San Diego. Please tell your friends and help us spread the word - we need every Troma fan in the county to join us on this cinematic odyssey.
