Wow. We’re about to officially enter Year 3 of Popcorn Reef. Can you believe that, folks? It’s all thanks to you, San Diego, so pat yourselves on the back for supporting wild cinematic adventures. Buckle up, because we’ve got one hell of a lineup planned for 2025.
For our official Two Year Anniversary show, we want to make things extra comfy for you. If you haven’t heard, The Regal Mira Mesa is in the midst of a theater-wide renovation process, and just last week, four of their screens re-opened with giant plush recliner seats, the likes of which are legitimately more comfortable than our couch at home.
If you go to the movies around here as much as we do, this is a very big deal. It’s a new era of San Diego moviegoing, and we want you folks to be amongst the first to experience it. So let’s christen the revamped auditorium with a night you’ll never forget. Join us on Wednesday, January 15th for the FIRST EVER retro screening in San Diego with reclining seats 😎, as we bring you Unearthed Films’ new 4K restoration of THE GUYVER, fully uncut in its R-rated form, with the legend himself, producer Brian Yuzna, making his second appearance at Popcorn Reef, this time beaming in virtually for a post-film Q&A.
THE GUYVER is one of those films that you really have to experience to fully understand. Based on a Japanese manga series, co-starring Mark Hamill as a washed-up CIA agent in a performance you’ll be thinking about for days after, and featuring the same incredible style of special effects and creature designs that you saw in SOCIETY, directors Steve Wang and Screaming Mad George put together what one could argue is a quintessential representation of early 90s fantasy cinema. Aesthetically, it’s been described as “an R-rated episode of POWER RANGERS from the makers of FROM BEYOND,” and that’s not really far off from what you can expect to see, in the best way possible.
And after the film, up on the big screen, Eddie from Popcorn Reef will indeed be speaking to the maker of FROM BEYOND (and SOCIETY, and RE-ANIMATOR), Brian Yuzna, about how this film came together, the legacy that it’s developed over the years, and what the process was like to put together this new 4K restoration from Unearthed Films.
On January 15th, come usher in a new year, and a new era of San Diego at the movies. We still can’t believe we’re doing a show with reclining seats.
Popcorn Reef's REEF RESTORATION NIGHT series celebrates the true contemporary heroes of retro cinema - the independent home video labels that work tirelessly to preserve, restore, and rescue deep cuts of cinema and subsequently issue amazing new digital restorations of these films on Blu-ray and UHD.
At REEF RESTORATION NIGHT, we're rolling out the red carpet to give these flicks the second premiere they deserve on the big screen, and to highlight the lord's work that independent home video labels are putting in to preserve the spirit of cinema for generations to come.
THE GUYVER Synopsis:
